Instead of trying to compare each game to its sequel/predecessor, how about we compare P3/P4 as a single series to P1/P2IS/EP as a single series and see what P5 can possibly take from them?I'll starta Social Links Love them! Both P3/P4 do a great job there. No one beats Mitsuru for me, but I loved the cast of both P3/P4 although personally I lean more towards the P3 cast simply because they seem more mature and the plot is darker.P1/P2 don't have social links but they do somewhat figure in the demon contact phase which I think is pretty cool I still find it more fun than negotiating in the mainline SMT series and since you can talk to your cast in every location and get different dialogue, the interactions do make-up for it in a think P5 should keep social links since by now everyone is used to them but should also allow for more interactions between the different members I would love to travel with everyone to locations like in P2 and be able to interact with them every step of the way rather than be by my lonesome self everywhere I go unless I am called to interact with them in a given location aka P3 dorm. Also, I would love for them to bring back the demon interactions. I loved receiving the demon cards in P1 and the spell cards/items/info in I think P4 was a step-up over P3 which, apart from the structured, non-Tartaros fights was pretty dull and repetitive. You've seen one floor and you pretty much have seen them all. At least P4 had a pronounced theme and I didn't find it a drag to go through them and thankfully, you don't have gazillion identical steps to climb up main route or down answer.P2 dungeons were indeed also similar in their repetitive mechanics but at least a sanatorium could be told apart from a factory in both isometric P2 and fps P1 so there was this variation that made it more appealing. In P3/P4, I couldn't wait to go back to the social interactions which I always had in P1/P2 at a lot of different dungeon locations. In P1/P2, that aspect was more unified and better complaint of P1/P2 was its overabundance of random encounters Estoma was truly a godsend which P3/P4 rectified through the presence of visible foes. But the problem with that is that you couldn't tell which shadow was there and they all looked the same until you actually went into the encounter itself and I didn't like it. Not a fan of random encounters either so the compromise would be to actually have foes that more closely resemble the actual enemies you will fight pretty much most JRPGs/WRPGs nowadays telegraph it graphically.Based on the footage of P5 we've seen, that seems to be the route Atlus are following and that makes me I think P3 story was overall better than P4 even if the gameplay wasn't but IMHO P1/P2EP/IS beats it still. It was way more fun to follow, way more dramatic, exciting and better paced. The idea of collective unconscious was better explored Maki/Deva System, Rumours altering reality, etc. P5 story so far sounds like it would follow the template of P3/P4 which I hope will be more exciting than both P3/P4 and closer to P1/P2 for the record, I loved P2 better but the references to P1 interspersed throughout make me look at the whole thing as a single interconnected plot.P5 should deepen the add more thoughts as they arise lol To answer whether the P1 and the P2 Duo feel like the modern Persona's, I would say that they do not. They share some common themes, but the feel is super different. The way the older persona games handle characters is different compared to the more modern persona's. There are no S. Links in the older games, and they have less of a spotlight individually. While the characters were pretty well developed for their time, the P1/2 characters feel basic compared to the character in P3/4. While I have no experience with the P2 remake, I did play P1 to completion. The audio/visual presentation has been updated dramatically. I say Atlus did a pretty good job with updating the game on that department. Just don't expect P3/4 levels of presentation. However, there are some issues with music repetition since the enemy encounter rate is the P3/4 stories kinda isolated the conflict into somewhere other than Japan Inside televisions/Tartarus, the older don't do that. From a tone level, you have mass amounts of people freaking out making the older games a bit darker. Instead of shadows you also fight demons in the older games, kinda amplifying why people are freaking out. While there is levity in the older games, you are not gonna have the campy lightheartedness form P4. The older persona's have light shades of SMT Nocturne if I had to make a comparison. If you are looking for the light hearted character driven story of the later personas, I wouldn't recommend the older games. Strictly looking at the story, the older personas make for a nice bridge between the later personas and the proper SMT series. The stories are also pretty good in their own right, if you go in with the mindset that those games are very much a product of their time.
